New Hope for Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer is malignant growth of breast tissue usually within milk ducts. Breast is sensual part of women, that part of their attractiveness, and increase women confidence. But the bad news is breast is the common place for cancer to growth. From the stastisic, breast cancer rank about top incidence cancer in women. And also rank as top leading cause of death in cancer patients.

With the development of current knowledges and researchs by scientists, there is an improvement in health care, diagnostic procedures, treatment options for breast cancer.

Cancer Growth
Cancer is genetic disease, since the main problem is located in cell nuclei. Cell begin to growth out of control, and demand more nutrient compare to other tissues. There are lot of theory explaning cancer growth. Cancer cell is not an instant process eventhough they growth so fast.

Cancer cell usually need a serial of DNA damaged as initiation, beside this they also need a promotor for their growth during early phase. At this phase, cancer cell also difficult to detect, and cause no symptoms. But after serial of replication their gaining more capabilities and behave more aggresively. Thus make cancer grows bigger and invasive to other tissues.

Metastasis as part of cancer characteristics that differentiate it from benign tumor. Metastasis is a capability of cancer cell to migrate and growth at different site from the primary site.

Cancer which has already metastasis, has worse prognosis compare to none. Commonly the patient with metastasis is in terminal stage, and the patient mostly treated palliatively.

New Hope in Breast Cancer
As, I describe above about the cancer growth. Cancer deaths about 90% are due to the spread of breast cancer. Commonly metastasis of the breast cancer cell is located in the lungs.

Hope in Breast Cancer

Nowadays, a breakthrough in knowledge, that the researchers have discovered the switch that enables breast cancer cells to travel to and be received in the lungs.

Metastasis was long thought a late event in cancer progression, but now is have been shown to be an early event that is dependent on HIF-1. HIF-1 itself a protein that controls genes that enable cells to survive in low oxygen, like cells in solid tumors.

In order for breast cancer cells to spread to lungs, they must leave the breast, enter blood vessels that lead to the lungs, and exit those same vessels. Blood vessels are pretty tight, a cell has to work pretty hard to get through the vessel wall. HIF-1 triggers the lung tissue to prepare for arriving breast cancer cells, and it also has role in helping cells to get access to blood vessels for their migration.

Lastly, a few years ago, John Hopkins research team found that digitalis/digoxin, commonly used to treat irregular heartbeats, can block HIF-1 production and can stop liver and prostate cancer cells from growing. And from their research they conclude that digitalis/digoxin could be use in treatment of breast cancer, since it has role in blocking HIF-1 and slow breast cancer growth and metastasis.

Eventhough, the research isn't finished yet. But, the hope that it bring for future, maybe could improve human health. Innovation is needed, we can't keep doing with same methods and hoping the different result.

We can't rely our life on dream or hope without efforts, but the people who has dream are innovative ones.

Soursup as anti-Cancer

Introduction
Soursop (Annona muricata) is a broadleaf flowering evergreen tree native to latin america. Soursop is also native to sub-Saharan African countries that lie within the tropics. Today, it is also grown in some areas of Southeast Asia. Its flavor has been described as a combination of strawberry and pineapple with sour citrus flavor notes contrasting with an underlying creamy flavor reminiscent of coconut or banana.

Nowadays, Soursop or the fruit from the graviola tree is linked to a miraculous natural cancer cell killer that 10,000 times stronger than Chemotherapy, there a lot of website publishing about this. Most of the website, said that soursop research about cancer is being covered by some some big corporations want to make back their money spent on years of research by trying to make a synthetic version of it for sale.
Soursop, Fact or Hoax?

I'm not gonna discuss about whether there is big conspirations or not, but about the fact of anti-cancer properties of soursop.

Anti-cancer properties
There is only little information about soursop research related to anti-cancer.
I'll try to summarize those researchs.

First, a study that published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea, stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at, 10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin.

The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that Graviola was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched, unlike chemotherapy which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells) causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.

Another study about soursop was conducted by Purdue University, found that leaves from the Graviola tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers.

Jerry L McLaughlin, a scientist from Purdue University found a active compound in soursop leaf, "acetogenins". Acetogenins trial has been done pre-clinicallnya, or in-vitro study that can kill cancer cell selectively. Acetogenins inhibits ATP (adenosine triphosphates). ATP itself, is a energy source for the cell. Cancer cell needs a lot of ATP for its growth and proliferations thus can be killed by acetogenins.

Those researchs looks like so dramatic, but it is a fact or not? And if it a fact, does it applicable?

Well, its maybe true if soursop have anti-cancer properties, especially the acetogenins. Acetogenins can inhibits ATP, stated by one study. But, most of the research is done in-vitro, or just pre-clinical studies and mostly only in laboratory. And most of the research only used the cancer cells.

Cancer Cell can be killed even with a water or by oil, but the problems is how to spare the normal cells.

ATP is important component of cell, whether cancer or normal cell. If a drug inhibits ATP production is not kill the cancer but also kill the normal cell, instantly. Another component that can inhibits our body energy synthesis is cyanide, one of the deadly toxin.

Another things that need to criticize, Cancer therapy or drug invention isn't a simple process like old times, since we face with human, a living organism. We can't easily try any drugs. A drug needs to pass severals trials before used widely or get FDA approved.

Most of the latest invention is about chemical modification of previous drugs, since a new invention of products need about 10-30 years to be accepted or to pass all the clinical trials and needs lot of money.
Anti-Cancer

Perhaps the soursop research about anti-cancer is about the early phase, and still long ways to go to be accepted. Some anti-cancer chemotherapy also found from herbal, such oncovin. And it is also expensive, since the process of extraction and the cost of production.

Conclusion
I can't accept Soursop as anti-cancer directly, since the complete clinical trial is not been done or completed. Thus can't be applied into daily practice, yet.

Maybe there are some testimonials about soursop as anticancer, whether is true or not, its difficult to be proved. But we need to criticize any reports especially reports with insufficent or less sytematic evidence.

Beware of Lung Cancer

Introduction
Lung cancer is a Cancer that forms in tissues of the lung, usually in the cells lining air passages or epithelial cells. The two main types are small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. These types are diagnosed based on how the cells look under a microscope.

Lung Cancer is the most common cancer worldwide nowadays, and also the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. It can be said that lung cancer is one the most challenging part of Oncology study since its high morbidity and mortality.

In 2007, lung cancer will account for approximately 15% of all cancer diagnoses and 28% of all cancer deaths. It is the second most diagnosed cancer in men and women (after prostate and breast, respectively), but it is the number one cause of death from cancer each year in both men and women. Because lung cancer can take years to develop, it is mostly found in older people. The average age of a person receiving a lung cancer diagnosis is 71 years.

Overall, lung cancer affects men more than women, but that gap is closing. The American Cancer Society's most recent lung cancer statistics in the United States for 2009 include an estimated 116,900 men and 103,350 women will be diagnosed with lung cancer and an estimated 88,900 men and 70,490 women will die from lung cancer.
Lung Cancer

Basic of Cancer
Until know, all the scientists agree that cancer is a genetic disease, thus leads to uncontrolled cell growth and proliferation with impaired cell function and invasiveness to surrounding tissues.

A cancer begins with an error, or mutation, in a cell's DNA. DNA mutations can be caused by the normal aging process or through environmental factors, such as cigarette smoke or breathing in asbestos.

Researchers have found that it takes a series of genetic changes to create a lung cancer cell. Before becoming fully cancerous, cells can be precancerous, which means they have some irregularities (mutations) but still function as lung cells. However, precancerous changes may signify progression toward cancer. When a cell with a genetic mutation divides, it passes along its abnormal genes to the two daughter cells, which then divide into four cells with errors in their DNA and so on. Once a cell has a genetic mutation, it may develop more. With each new mutation, the cell becomes more irregular and may not be as effective in carrying out their function in lung tissue. At a later stage of disease, some cells can migrate away from the main tumor and start growing in other parts of the body. These sites are called metastases.

Primary and Secondary Lung Cancer
Primary lung cancer starts in the lungs. The cancer cells are abnormal lung cells. Sometimes, people will have cancer from another part of their body travel, or metastasize, to their lungs. This is called secondary lung cancer, because the lungs are secondary compared to the original, primary, location of the cancer. Secondary lung cancer is not lung cancer, but rather the type of cancer from its original site, such as breast cancer. Secondary lung cancer will be treated differently than primary lung cancer, because it is a different disease. This web site focuses on primary lung cancer.

Risk Factor of Lung Cancer
Cigarette smoking is the cause of most lung cancers, but there are other factors, too. Exposure to asbestos, radon, environmental factors, or secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer. Sometimes, a person develops lung cancer and doctors do not know why. There are often internal factors (inherited or from our genes) as well as external or environmental factors (from outside of our bodies) involved in the development of any type of cancer.

Thus by identifying the risk factors, we can minimalized our chance to get lung cancer, also beware of having lung cancer.

The signs and symptoms of lung cancer
The signs and symptoms take years to develop and they may not appear until the disease is advanced. Since cancer at first time is about small size, and causing no impairment lung function, thus the patient will be asymptomatic and feeling just do well.
Thus also happens when patient experienced first symptoms such as cough, most of them will think this as usuall cough that will overcome by day. But when the cough seems untreated and the cancer keeps growing inside the body.

Some symptoms of lung cancer that are in the chest:
Coughing, especially if it persists or becomes intense
Pain in the chest, shoulder, or back unrelated to pain from coughing
A change in color or volume of sputum
Shortness of breath
Changes in the voice or being hoarse
Harsh sounds with each breath (stridor)
Recurrent lung problems, such as bronchitis or pneumonia
Coughing up phlegm or mucus, especially if it is tinged with blood
Coughing up blood
If the original lung cancer has spread, a person may feel symptoms in other places in the body. Common places for lung cancer to spread include other parts of the lungs, lymph nodes, bones, brain, liver, and adrenal glands.

Some symptoms of lung cancer that may occur elsewhere in the body:
Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss
Fatigue
Headaches, bone or joint pain
Bone fractures not related to accidental injury
Neurological symptoms, such as unsteady gait or memory loss
Neck or facial swelling
General weakness
Bleeding
Blood clots
Smoking takes you to cancer

Screening
The goal of a screening program is to find cancer at an early stage when there are fewer symptoms. Treatment at early stages of cancer can lead to more treatment options, less invasive surgery, and a higher survival rate. For example, in recent years, the five-year survival rate of persons whose cancers were diagnosed when they were still localized (had not spread) was almost 50%. This drops to 2% for persons whose cancers were diagnosed after their cancers had spread distantly. Even though early detection can save lives, there is currently no approved screening test for lung cancer that has been proven to improve survival or detect localized disease. There are studies underway, though, to find appropriate screening tools.

Early detection of lung cancer is critical for improving survival of this disease because only 15% of lung cancers are found when they are localized. Since there are few or no symptoms in the early stages of the disease, the majority of lung cancers are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease. Symptoms of later-stage disease may include a persistent cough, sputum streaked with blood, chest pain, voice change, and recurrent pneumonia or bronchitis.

Testing people who are known to be at high risk for developing lung cancer may help find tumors at an earlier stage when they are small and more easily treated. People at high risk include men and women

Aged 60 years and older who currently smoke or have a history of smoking
- With previous lung tumors
- With chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Possible screening techniques for lung cancer include

Microscopic analysis of cells in sputum
- Fiberoptic examination of bronchial passages (bronchoscopy)
- Low-dose spiral computed tomography (CT) scans
- Evaluation of molecular markers in sputum

Good Cholesterol Lowers Colon Cancer Risk

On March 2011, Scientists published their study about relationship between colon cancer and blood cholesterol ---- Higher concentrations of serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol are associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer, according to a study published online in Gut.

Colon cancer is one most common cancer, and also one of leading cause of death by cancer. Colorectal cancer is a major health burden worldwide. The overall incidence and mortality from colon cancer has been on a slow decline over the past 20 years in the United States; however, colon cancer remained the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality in 2008. A multitude of risk factors have been linked to colorectal cancer, including heredity, environmental exposures, and inflammatory syndromes affecting gastrointestinal tract

Concept of Nanomedicine

Introduction
Nowadays, we already improved our knowledge of medicine, including the concept of the disease pathogenesis. Most of the diseases that we face recently can be explained as an alterations in biologic processes at the molecular or nanoscale level. Wheter it caused by external (such as infection) or internal (such as mutated genes).

Non-smoking Has Different Type of Lung Cancer

Introduction
Cancer is disease that characterized by uncontrolled growth of cell grow and multiplication, and malfunction. Cancer is malignant, because its invasive behaviour. Cancer tissues are dangerous for host because they take oxygen, nutrients, and space from healthy cells and they invade and destroy or reduce the ability of normal tissues to function.
