Classical Music for Fetal Brain Development

April 25th 2009 09:57
Introduction
Fetal development is very crucial and highly sensitive to challenges, especially during first trimester any kind of disturbs will cause major effects for fetal life, from death to major defect of organ, The impacts will decrease if being given in late pregnancy, because critical phase has passed. Fetal development not only important for intrauterine live but also for next step of development to reach adult. Some evidences show that low birth weight baby has more risk to developing vascular disease and diabetic.
The most important factor that influence fetal development is intrauterine condition, so mother has to maintain good health and nutrition to ensure good intrauterine condition.

External stimulation may also play role in fetal development, but may be not as much as intrauterine condition because fetal is well protected by amniotic fluid, placenta, etc.

Music in pregnancy
Now i gonna discuss about music in pregnancy. During intrauterine periods, sounds may effects fetal, especially mother's voice, heartbeat, intestine, etc. that being transmitted through her body and reach amniotic fluid then fetus. Sound stimuli will give impacts to various organs such as; Brain, Hearing (Ear), fetal heart, fetal movement, and also emotional communications.
I will more focus on Brain development.

[I]Brain development/I] is a complex process and completed about 85% during 3 years of life.
It consists of linking the synapse, more stimuli that being given, more synapse being linked. After the synapse being linked, it has to use often, to make more strong network in brain. If being rare used, it will disappear. Sound stimuli begin to show its role after 18 weeks of pregnancy, because fetal ear become active.

Sudargo Grace, a musician and educator state that basic of classical music come from human pulse rhythm, so can help the development of brain, mind, character, and even our body. Several researches show that classical music consist of fluctuation of high and low pitch that can give stimulation to brain as alpha wave. Alpha wave gives effects such as comfort, calm, and peaceful.
Brain and Fetus

Siegel (1999), stated that music can effect right hemisphere development, and maybe left hemisphere because of connection between them.
Music consists of three main components; rhythm, beat and harmony. Beat will influence the body, while rhythm influence our mind, and harmony influence our spirit. Classical music is a music that has regular rhythm and tone. So, can give positive stimuli to fetal development.

Music stimulation not only work intrauterine, but also during childhood. Because brain development is not complete yet. Many reports say that classic music make children more clever, better emotionally, and good motoric ability.

Conclusion
Classical music is good for brain development because it gives good stimulation to the network of nervous system.
Eventhough external stimulation can give good impact, it gonna worthless if intrauterine condition is not good. So besides providing stimulation, maintaining good maternal health and nutrition is needed for optimal fetal development. Such as, taking adequate folic acid to prevent neural tube defect.
