Vitamin D and Multiple Sclerosis

Introduction
Multiple Sclerosis is disease caused by inflammation process within nerve tissue, which the fatty myelin sheaths around the axons of the brain and spinal cord are damaged, thus lead to demyelination and scarring as well as a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms.
Multiple Sclerosis

Disease onset usually occurs in young adults, and it is more common in women. It has a prevalence that ranges between 2 and 150 per 100,000. MS was first described in 1868 by Jean-Martin Charcot.

Multiple Sclerosis damaged the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other. Nerve cells communicate by sending electrical signals called action potentials down long fibers called axons, which are wrapped in an insulating substance called myelin. While in multiple sclerosis, the body's own immune system attacks and damages the myelin. When myelin is lost or damaged, the axons can no longer effectively conduct signals. Thus the communication of nerve tissue is impaired.

The name of multiple sclerosis refers to scars (scleroses—better known as plaques or lesions) particularly in the white matter of the brain and spinal cord, which is mainly composed of myelin. Although much is known about the mechanisms involved in the disease process, the cause remains unknown. Theories include genetics or infections. Different environmental risk factors have also been found.

Almost any neurological symptom can appear with the disease, whether sensory (paraesthesia, hypoesthesia) or muscle weakness, and often progresses to physical and cognitive disability.

Multiple Sclerosis has several forms of clinical manifestation, with new symptoms occurring either in discrete attacks (relapsing forms) or slowly accumulating over time (progressive forms). Between attacks, symptoms may go away completely, but permanent neurological problems often occur, especially as the disease advances.

Until now, there is no known cure for multiple sclerosis. Treatments attempt to return function after an attack, prevent new attacks, and prevent disability. Multiple sclerosis medications can have adverse effects or be poorly tolerated, and many patients pursue alternative treatments, despite the lack of supporting scientific study. The prognosis is difficult to predict; it depends on the subtype of the disease, the individual patient's disease characteristics, the initial symptoms and the degree of disability the person experiences as time advances. Life expectancy of patients is 5 to 10 years lower than that of the unaffected population.

Vitamin D and Multiple Sclerosis
Vitamin D is known as vitamin that important for bone health, because its helps calcium absorption in the gut, and calcium metabolism and excretion, thus maintain blood calcium level, and bone mineralization.

Several researchs have suggested that Vitamin D can cut mulitple slerosis incidence and prevent from its relapse. But, the explanation about it is not well described.

Vitamin D is believed as an agent that helps modify immune system functioning, also higher vitamin D level have shown effects of decreasing adverse immune overactivity that occurs in autoimmune diseases such Multiple Sclerosis.

Vitamin D can be synthesized in our body, especially in our skin by help of sun exposure. Thus an increased sun exposure can give higher vitamin D levels may help to protect against the risk of developing autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis.
Vitamin D

Sun exposure, one of the simplest and easiest way to get vitamin D, skin with the help of Ultraviolet synthesize the vitamin D, thus sun exposure is linked to lower risk of multiple sclerosis. But prolong exposure of ultraviolet also not good for our health, since ultraviolet radiation is linked with the skin cancers.

Thus, proper amount of exposure is needed in order to get the benefits effects such as vitamin D synthesize but avoid the harmful effects such as skin cancers.

Eventhough, vitamin D is shown to be a protective factors for having multiple sclerosis, but multiple sclerosis itself is a complex disease, and the explanation of cause and mechanism isn't complete yet. Thus many factors are involved in development and progression of multiple sclerosis.

What, we can do are maximizing the protective efforts thus avoid or minimize the harmful factors. Basically it will give a better outcomes than do nothing.

Knowledges will always develop, like a tree, we as mankind should accept the new knowledges but not forget about the past, since the past is the foundation for us to step forward.

Healthy Diet for Healthy Live

Healthy Diet, maybe almost everyone have ever known about that. It maybe a common topic in health article or health news.
What makes it becomes so important to emphasize -- Everyone need diet everyday, to get the energy to fullfil the nutritional demand. So what kind of diet that you eat, will determine your health condition.
choosing your Diet

Some diet can give immediate impact, such as poor hygiene process diet, may cause you watery diarrhea, or other kind of infection, but mostly kind of diet will give impact after long period of time. Kind of diet will contribute to our health after a period of time.

Some kind of diet is protective factor for the disease, and others is risk factor for the disease.

There are many trials or researchs have been done about healthy diet. Such as: Eating a lot of fruits and vegetables as a child is associated with healthier arteries as an adult. The amount of vegetables consumed in childhood correlated to the amount of arterial stiffness in adulthood. — Children who consistently eat lots of fruits and vegetables lower their risk of having stiff arteries in young adulthood.

Arterial stiffness is associated with atherosclerosis, which underlies heart disease. When arteries are stiff, the heart works harder to pump blood.

A pattern of eating fewer vegetables in childhood was associated with higher pulse wave velocity as an adult. The association remained significant when adjusted for traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as high-density lipoprotein, or HDL, (good cholesterol) and low-density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol). The group with the persistent pattern of eating more vegetables and fruit from childhood to adulthood, had an average 6 percent lower pulse wave velocity compared to those who ate the least vegetables and fruits.
The number of lifestyle risk factors (low vegetable consumption, low fruit consumption, low physical activity and smoking) in childhood was directly associated with pulse wave velocity as an adult. This association remained significant when adjusted for the number of lifestyle risk factors in adulthood.

Eventhough the trial showed that eating vegetables is good, but it doesn't mean that we don't other kinds of food such as meat, bread, rice, fish, etc.
Since vegetable mostly contain minerals or vitamins and fiber those are micronutrient for our health, eventhough we don't eat vegetable and fruits we will stay alive, but may not healthy as person with vegetable and fruits in their menu.
Balance Diet

Concept of Balance diet is important to maintain our health and to prevent the disease. Every nutritions have its own portions in our diet. Most portion is for major nutrients such carbohydrate, fat, and protein. For those major nutrients, whole grain or other complex carbohydrate is better than sugar or simple carbohydrate for our health. Unsaturated Fat also better than saturated fat.

Looks Like difficult for us, right. We want a delicious food, but in other side we need to maintain our health. Of course it's a dillema for many of us.

For me, Eat what you want to eat, but keep it in normal amount or portions, and balance it with exercise or physical activity, good sleep, to achieve healthy live.

Childhood obesity as a Risk factor for Cardiovascular disease

How big is the problem?
Obesity itself is a medical condition in which excess body fat accumulated to the extent and it may have effect to the heart. Early obesity alone, is linked to certain abnormalities in the blood that can predispose individuals to developing cardiovascular disease early in adulthood.

Based on US government statistics, almost 32% of US nation's children and adolescents are obese or overweight. Of that 32%, 20% of kids 6- to 11-years-old and 18% of those between 12 and 19 are actually obese.
Or in the other words is the obese children are quite large in numbers.

The upward shifts in population body-fat distributions. Shown, by the increase in obesity has been particularly marked in children. There is strong evidence that adult obesity is a risk factor for atherosclerotic disease, cardiovascular events, and cardiac dysfunction, and partly a consequence of its strong association with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Until now, cardiovascular's disease is the leading cause of death in the world, not only death but also cause significant numbers of morbidity.

Raising in childhood obesity, gives a substantial challenges for clinicians and those concerned with public health. It maybe related to widespread decline in physical activity and energy expenditure, without a compensatory decline in dietary energy intake. As an example: the usage of motorized transport has replaced physical modes of transport such walking and cycling. Also, calorie density of many foods and drinks, make calorie intake excess the daily needs. As result, accumulation body fat can't be avoided.
Sedentary lifestyle

Health effects
Obesity is associated with cardiovascular disease and also metabolic syndrome.
Childhood obesity, it will cause a widespread increase in body fat from early life, so it increases the burden of obesity of longer duration, and will lead to certain circumstances such greater risk of cardiovascular disease.

Childhood obesity carries a greatly increased risk of adult obesity, which is likely to be accentuated as adult obesity prevalence increases.
Adult obesity investigations may find out several informations about health behaviors, diet and exercise from childhood period.
Obese children

Childhood obesity has the same effects on the cardiovascular system as adult obesity but the changes occurs earlier., including impaired endothelial function, diminished arterial distensibility, adverse changes in intimamedia thickness and increased risk of atherosclerosis.

From Health Central study, obese children experienced fatty deposits in their arteries earlier by age of 7, and developed stages of arteries hardening in their teens. This may become the first generation of kids whose life expectancy will be shorter than those of their parents.

American Heart Association found in 2008, that obese children and teens or have high cholesterol have the thickness of artery walls as 45-year-olds. The researchers at Nemours Children's Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida also found that obese children are showing higher levels of the clotting factor fibrinogen, as well as ten times higher levels of the inflammation marker C-reactive protein as early as age seven.

In summary, that obese children as young as seven, are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, even before others medical condition appears such as metabolic syndrome.

Suggestions
From those findings, we need to do more aggressive interventions for weight control in obese children, even for those who do not have the co-morbidities of the metabolic syndrome.

In the last two decades, we have seen a drop in mortality from cardiovascular disease attributed to better risk factors control. Such as cigarette smoking prohibition, aggressive treatment of high cholesterol and blood pressure and improvements in diagnosis and treatment modalities.
However, that increasing levels of obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome components will reverse the current favorable mortality trends. Moreover, the current social distribution of obesity, which is more prevalent in lower social groups, suggests that the increasing importance of obesity as a determinant of cardiovascular risk could exacerbate social inequalities in cardiovascular disease in the West.
obese person

American Academy of Pediatrics develops a simple steps known as the 5, 2, 1, 0 plan, in order to prevent childhood obesity and take care of obese children.

• 5: Eat at least five fruits and vegetables a day.

• 2: Limit screen time (TV, video games, computer) to two hours or less a day.

• 1: Get one hour or more of physical activity a day.

• 0: Drink fewer sugar-sweetened beverages.

Juicing Vegetables

What better way to increase your vitamin and mineral intake, boost your energy and general feeling of wellbeing than to juice your own vegetables and fruits. It’s delicious, healthy and natural and the easiest way to ensure you are eating your daily serve of vegetables and fruit, especially for those who seem to have a hard time preparing and eating vegetables.

Vegetables, especially colourful vegetables appear to fight inflammation and are therefore highly recommended for rosacea sufferers. There has been some debate on whether or not nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes should be consumed while trying anti-inflammatory style diet. I have no reactions to these foods so I can and do freely eat them. They are high in phytonutrients, vitamin c and beta carotene and are a huge part of my diet. I include them in a lot of my juices as they add great flavour. If you think you may have a reaction to them, or any member of the nightshade family, just avoid them for a couple of weeks

Alkaline Diet and Rosacea

I myself have never tried the alkaline diet although I have considered it numerous times and will consider it in the future should my flare ups recur. My skin has greatly improved over the last month or two, I’m guessing and hoping due to my improved dietary changes. I have heard of many success’ with this type of diet and can see how it would work with the body to greatly improved a sluggish system, hence clearing of the skin, after all our skin, being the largest organ of our body is also a part of a window to assessing our general health. We all want that nice healthy glow to our skin don’t we? But not “too much” of a glow 

The alkaline diet is very cleansing in nature, helping the body and immune system rid itself of the build up of toxins causing a variety of illness’s and symptoms. As our bodies are naturally more alkaline than acidic, it makes sense to digest more alkaline type foods than acid forming foods. This is turn balances the body to a more natural state of being. You may notice that on the list of acidic foods, that there are many of the known triggers that cause flare ups in rosaceans. This supports my belief, and many others, that eating more of these alkaline foods can help with rosacea. The diet mainly consists of vegetables, juices, soups, water, some fruits and salads. Incorporating more of these types of foods along with sipping water throughout the day, helps neutralize the acids that can cause rosacea flushing (coffee, alcohol, sugar, cigarettes etc) I don’t think there is a need follow this diet strictly as that will ultimately lead to failure, but the simple act of making a conscious effort to increase your usual intake of some of these foods will certainly improve your health and hopefully your rosacea. Simple and easy changes such as drinking more water one day, having a glass of freshly squeezed vegetable juice the next, adding some extra vegetables to your meal one night or a nice hot bowl of homemade soup on the weekends won’t impede on your dietary lifestyle so much that you give up within a few days. In fact you may be surprised how easy and effective these ever so small changes make you may find yourself naturally wanting to eat more and more of the good stuff and less of the bad
