Introduction To Healthy Eating
May 20th 2008 01:15
Look, there are soooo many beliefs out there on what’s good for you, what’s not, such as eat eggs- don’t eat eggs, pasta is good for you- no its not, coffee- good or bad etc What do you believe in? Well I’ve tried many of the “healthy diets”, low carb has been a favourite of mine for many years on and off. I even tried the Atkins Diet, with definite success in weight loss, however I did have to wonder the health implications from that, but that’s a debate all on its own. The CSIRO diet was very good but couldn’t keep up following the recipes in the book. Anyway, long story short, everyone is going to tell you what is the “healthiest” diet plan there is out there.
For a long, long time I insisted pasta and bread was evil so I tried to stay away from it as long as possible. But as with all diets and meal plans I have tried, I could never stay committed long enough to really see much benefit. Plus I absolutely LOVED pasta and bread. Eventually I became so obsessed with carbohydrates, longing for that piece of toast in the morning (pleeeese, can I just have one) and watching my family with sad puppy dogs eyes happily devouring their spaghetti Bolognese, even dreaming about all those wonderful “bad foods”. Eventually, I usually get to the stage where I say bugger it and then I eat anything and everything that I wasn’t supposed to, including chocolate, cakes and anything sweet. My diet then became so unbalanced I felt quite ill.
I have recently changed my way of thinking by believing that we should be able to eat all foods we desire, even the sweet stuff (but made with more natural sweeteners). I no longer try and cut anything out of my diet, instead concentrating on eating more freshly prepared home cooked meals, eating more vegetables (which I was never too keen on by the way). Other ways I have made changes is simply switching to the “brown” varieties of certain foods such as white bread and white rice to the wholegrain varieties. Even with this, I don’t limit myself to ONLY eating these. I on occasion allow myself to eat white rice and to have white bread. The thing is to not be so strict with what you eat, but try to eat more of the healthier foods during the week than not. Our bodies are designed to filter out the crap, just don’t make it work overtime and you’ll feel much better for it. I have found this is the best solution for me as I believe food is meant to be enjoyed as well as fueling our bodies, as long as you have no allergies or intolerances to certain foods.
There are so many “suggestions” from a lot of well meaning people of what I should be eating and what I shouldn’t, and quite frankly, if I followed everyone’s advice, I would literally starve to death...( No tomatoes, no pasta, no red meat, no chicken, no pasta, no bread, no rice, no fruit, no spinach, no dairy, limited vegetables, etc, the list goes on )... For rosaceans in particular, keeping a food diary is going to be one of the most helpful things you can do. We are all different and we all have different triggers. It’s up to us to find out what we should and shouldn’t be eating.
I am compiling a list of healthy recipes, concentrating more on the whole foods side of things along with some anti-inflammatory recipes that are especially good for people suffering from rosacea and other inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and heart disease. I try to include a photo of the final dish if I can as we all kind of want to see how the finished product ends up, don’t we…

It's a good idea to avoid processed foods, but it seems to hard! I just had macaroni and cheese...

Why should we miss out on the things we like just because someone says so, i think people are so conditioned these days to listen to what's good, what's bad, what you should do and what you shouldn't do. It seems as a society, we need people to tell us how to live otherwise we freak out about having so many choices. It's really not that hard though, just stick to what you love, be realistic (like maybe one piece of cake or one cookie is plenty, not the whole box) and just enjoy yourself!
Love your blog, just found it and i'm hooked.
