The Era of Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy has become popular topics in world, because its unique potency in treatment of chronic diseases. Stem cells with their unique and facile potentialities, offer an option for organ dysfunction. The concept of regenerative therapy has been proposed as the principle of stem cell therapy.
The idea of regeneration and repair are aimed at reviving existing malfunctiong cells, repopulating the organ by new cells from exogenous or endogenous sources, altering the extracellular matrix, or increasing blood supply by enhancing vessel formation.
This idea is supported by scientific facts that damaged organ promote reserved stem cell to replace and repair damaged tissues. But the regeneration capability may be insufficient enough, thus causes organ dysfunction. Therefore, exogenous sources are needed.
What is Stem Cells?
Stem Cells are unspecialized ,clonogenic and capable of unlimited self-renewal, aprocess during which a stem cell can divide symmetrically
and give rise to two daughter stem cells.
It is this capacity to self-renew over a prolonged period of time that ensures that stem cell populations last throughout the life of an organism. It also able to divide asymmetrically and give rise to one daughter stem cell and the other daughter cell that in response to appropriate signals can differentiate into multiple types of differentiated cells.
Types of Stem Cells
There are two types of stem cells; embryonic and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are obtained from the inner cell mass of 5-6 days embryo. These stem cells has total potential of differentiation, they could differentiate to any tissues of adult.
While adult stem cells are obtained from somatic tissues, the differentiation potential also could be wide range type of cells or almost all types of adult tissues.
Potential Uses of Stem Cells
* In the field of Biotechnology(drug discovery & development) – stem cells can provide specific cell types to test new drugs. Availability of pluripotent stem cells would allow drug testing in a wider range of cell types & to reduce animal testing
* In the field of Cell based therapies: Regenerative therapy to treat Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, ALS, spinal cord injury, stroke, severe burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Besides that stem cells also could be used in tissue engineering to replace damaged organ such in transplantation technologies.
The Prospects
The promising results from many centers involved in the treatment of endstage
diseases using stem cells highlight the wide range of possibilities in this field. Despite its very early stage, almost every major medical center across the globe is involved in at least one cell therapy effort. Companies are viewing at multibillion dollar markets in cell therapy in the future.

I'll try to answer that based on my knowledge and literature searching.
Stem Cell has shown its potencial in vitro trial, which current technology. Scientist could control the development of stem cell into a specific cell in order to replace the damaged cell/tissue.
But, the effects in human still insignificant. The possible explaining theory is "Incapability of stem cell to survive in living tissue."
There is strict protocol in conducting research in human, that we can't try a new method that not proven its beneficience, since there are standard treatment regiment.
That's why human trial of stem cells is restricted to certain conditions most of them later stage that untreatable.
